Through a cooperative funding agreement, the national Nutrition and Physical Activity Program to Prevent Obesity and Other Chronic Diseases (NPAO), located within the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, is currently helping 28 state health department programs improve nutrition and physical activity, and ultimately prevent and control obesity and other chronic diseases among target groups. NPAO funds seven states at the basic implementation status, meaning these particular states are examining their current obesity prevention and control approaches and developing new ones. The other 21 state health departments that NPAO funds are in the capacity-building stage, which includes gathering data, building partnerships, and creating statewide health plans.
As a component of the cooperative agreement, each of the funded states develops and implements a targeted intervention that addresses at least two of the five levels of the Socio-Ecological Model; focuses on specific intervention settings; is designed to be sustainable; and targets a constant population with respect to age, physical location, or other defining characteristics such as ethnicity/race, gender, and geographical area. Additionally, the intervention should attempt to affect overweight and obesity through one or more major pathways such as increased breastfeeding, physical activity, fruit and vegetable intake, reduced television viewing and change in the determinants of caloric balance.
This presentation will provide a synthesis and overview of the types of state intervention strategies according to the demographic characteristics, level of Socio-Ecologic framework, and settings and pathways as described above. Specific state intervention examples will also be offered.
