E-portfolio: Personalizing health and wellness courses

Martha B. Rider, PhD, MS, CHES, Instructional Technology, Health & Educational Studies, University of Tennessee, P.O. Box 5883, 812 Westridge Circle, Maryville, TN 37803, 865-984-2203, utk4student@yahoo.com

The goal of health education is to teach the students how to maintain or improve their health and thusly the quality of their life for the rest of their lives. Students enrolled in introductory health courses have diverse levels of skills and motivations. What piques their interest in health today may not be what they seek to understand tomorrow. It is our responsibility as health educators to teach skills that will endure as they pass through the many stages of life. Generally, most people are interested in themselves and, as we say in the health profession, engage your stakeholders. The e-Personal Health Portfolio is an online learning module (can be completed in hardcopy format) that takes the student from their genetic background to end of life medical issues. There are five components: a family medical history, an assessment of present health status, a behavioral change project, an activity that teaches how to find and evaluate valid and reliable information, and completion of a Living Will and Durable Power of Attorney for Health Care for end of life issues. By completing the portfolio online, the students have more privacy (privacy issues are discussed at length prior to participation), feedback and grading are simpler for the instructor, compliance improves as progress can be checked at anytime, and the student creates an important document that details their personal health status. The project can be incorporated into any general health and wellness course and can be adapted to students from junior high to college.
