If community is central to the mission of health education and for eliminating racial and ethnic health disparities, what areas of research need further examination to close the gap in health and social inequalities? This question formed the basis for an invitational two-day summit of 85+ multidisciplinary researchers and practitioners in August 2005 in Alexandria, Virginia. Sponsored by the Society for Public Health Education (SOPHE), the meeting built on significant reports on racial and ethnic health disparities issued during the last five years by focusing on the synthesis, translation and dissemination of the research in the community. This presentation will discuss the Summit organization, major presentations, and outcomes. Consensus-based recommendations will be presented for health education research in the areas of social context and culture, access to services and resources, data and information needs, policy, workforce, transdisciplinary strategies, health literacy, program evaluation, and new qualitative methodologies. Time will be included for audience dialogue about the research recommendations, as well as for input into SOPHE's plans for disseminating the research agenda to policy makers and community members and addressing the priority research areas.
