New American militarism

The American infatuation with military might, a hallmark of U.S. foreign policy after the Cold War, helps explain why the Bush administration responded to 9/11 as it did. But in committing the United States to an open-ended "global war on terror" and especially in invading Iraq as part of that war, the administration has laid bare the very real limits of U.S. military power.
