This presentation reports on the National Nursing Centers Consortium (NNCC) grant received from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services in 2002. The grant was mandated under Public Law 107-116 to conduct an evaluation of nurse-managed centers in Pennsylvania to document the ability of this type of health center to serve as safety net providers. The evaluation found nurse-managed health centers are: safety net providers, provide a medical home for the underserved, struggle financially and need cost-based reimbursement and should be recognized as both safety net providers and viable partners with the federal government to reduce health disparities.
