The original National Health Education Standards Report – National Health Education Standards – Achieving Health Literacy was produced in 1995. It has served the promotion of health education and health literacy skills in school students as well as development of state and local curriculum standards in a number of ways over the years. During 1995-1996 a new project to review, revise, and update the original NHES document to reflect new understanding of best practices in health education, student learning, and health literacy was initiated. Lead organizations and co-sponsors for this project – The National Health Education Standards Review and Revision Initiative - included the American Association for Health Education (AAHE), American Cancer Society (ACS), American School Health Association (ASHA), the School Health Education and Services section (SHES) of the American Public Health Association (APHA), and the Society of State Directors of HPER (SSDHPER). This presentation led by three panel members of the NHES Review and Revision Initiative will review the journey and process of the NHES revision as well outline the content included in the new report – National Health Education Standards: Achieving Excellence (2006). The theory and research supporting the new standards will be discussed. Ideas for successful implementation of the standards for assessment, curriculum development, and improvement of classroom instruction will be explored.
