Overview on human rights and war

Barry S. Levy, MD, MPH, Adjunct Professor of Public Health, Tufts University School of Medicine, 20 North Main Street #200, PO Box 1230, Sherborn, MA 01770, 508-650-1039, blevy@igc.org

Human rights are frequently violated during war. Of particular concern are human rights violations affecting civilians, especially women, children, and other vulnerable populations. Increasingly, civilians are targeted during war. Other human rights issues during war include torture and psychological warfare, forced displacement of people, and use of indiscriminate weapons, including landmines and weapons of mass destruction. This presentation will also provide a framework for approaches to protect human rights during war and the aftermath of war.
