Progress in Developing a Typology of Local Public Health System Structure and Dynamics

This presentation will describe interim findings from a national study to develop a typology of local public health system structure and composition that reflects the alternative ways in which public health responsibilities and resources are allocated among key governmental and nongovernmental organizations. This typology will allow comparisons to be made across communities and states and facilitate the identification of the relative strengths and weaknesses of alternative system configurations. The typology will also allow researchers and policymakers to more readily track how public health systems change over time and identify the causes and consequences of such change. Initial dimensions of the typology will be described and potential applications of the typology will be examined for policy and managerial decision-making.
