This presentation provides an overview of data and key findings from the National Profile of Local Health Departments, a periodic national census survey of all local health departments in the U.S. The most recent round of the Profile was completed in Fall 2005, with earlier rounds conducted in 1997, 1993, and 1989. The Profile captures key information on departmental organization and governance, financing, workforce, populations served, services offered, and partnerships. The 2005 Profile identified important trends in funding, staffing, and service delivery that have important implications for public health policy and practice.

Learning Objectives: At the end of this session, participants will be able to

(
• describe the organizational and financial characteristics of local health departments nationally; (
• assess variation in the scope of services offered by health departments; and (
• evaluate the extent of change in local health department characteristics over time.
