Using the Medical Expenditure Panel Survey, Dr. Ihara will explore the connections between health insurance and medical service access with family level employment characteristics. Based on prior research conducted by the Employee Benefits Research Institute, Dr. Ihara will test the hypothesis that workers with unions are much more likely to have employment-based health benefits than non-union workers. EBRI found that 86 percent of union workers were covered by health benefits through their own job, compared with 59.5 percent of nonunion workers. Overall, 95.4 percent of union workers had employment-based health benefits, compared with 77.8 percent of nonunion workers. In addition, union workers are much less likely to be uninsured than non-union workers (2.5% v. 15%).
