Nurses, unions and patient outcomes: What do we know? What do we need to know?

This presentation will review the current literature and other sources on the relationship between unions and patient care outcomes, with a particular focus on nursing. As research on the impact of patient outcomes of a variety of organizational factors has continued to develop, the role of union representation and labor-management relations has received relatively little attention. Understanding these factors, both independently and in relationship to other factors that affect or potentially affect patient care outcomes, is particularly and increasingly important in light of potential large-scale changes in labor law as it applies to nurses.
