Fiona Adshead, Deputy Chief Medical Officers (DCMO), Department of Health's, Health and Social Care Standards and Quality Group, Richmond House, 79 Whitehall, London SW1A 2NS, England, 020 7210 4850, dhmail@dh.gsi.gov.uk

This presentation will explore the context within which national governments make decisions about appropriate levels of intervention, providing an insight into factors which influence, frame and inform the role of Government in the UK, with particular reference to public health. It will use practical examples to highlight the limits of national legislation and governance, and demonstrate how culture and public perception play a role within an increasingly globalised and personalised public health agenda.
