APHA President Session: Public Health & Human Rights: A Transatlantic Perspective
This annual President Session is presented in partnership with Public Health, the international journal of the Royal Institute of Public Health, published by Elsevier. This President Session will offer its audience the exciting opportunity to hear and join in dialogue with invited expert speakers respected for their knowledge of diverse national and international health and legal systems responsible for influencing the health of populations. Public health is often protected through the law. However, it is also apparent that civil and human rights might be interfered with by laws intended to protect the public’s health. Legislation about smoking in public places is perhaps the best known example of this phenomenon. However, recent experience of control of communicable diseases such as SARS and influenza offer enormous scope for exploring the interaction of law and public health. This Session will explore the interface between law and public health and human rights, with particular focus on comparing and contrasting UK and European experience with those of the USA.
Learning Objectives: To promote understanding and to offer analysis of the complex relationships between policy, law, human rights and public health, in particular drawing upon UK and European experience as compared to the USA.
