Session: Epidemiologic Methods: Costs in Dollars and Lives
4126.0: Tuesday, November 07, 2006: 12:30 PM-2:00 PM
Oral
Epidemiologic Methods: Costs in Dollars and Lives
This session covers topics related to epidemiologic methods. Specific presentations include the use of median age at death to describe early death, modeling chronic disease incidence and mortality using linnked data, methodologic issues related to estimating disease burden and cost, estimating the cost of obesity, and data source issues related to surveillance for mild traumatic brain injury.
Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of the session, the participant (learner) in this session will be able to: 1. Evaluate the utility of median-ages-at-death as a descriptor of premature mortality 2. Understand how to model chronic disease incidnce and mortality 3. Identify alternative study designs and sampling strategies to obtain national representative estimates of dengue burden and cost of illness studies 4. articulate the strengths and weaknesses of the three different methods for determining the cost of obesity 5. Discuss the desirability of surveillance for mild traumatic brain injury.
