Chronic Disease Epidemiology: Effect of Weight and Exercise on Health
Risk factors for chronic diseases are numerous and complex. This session focuses on the effect of weight and physical activity on health. Sessions will discuss physical activity as it relates to disease prevention, predictors (individual and community) for body mass index, ethnic differences in body composition, weight change over time in adults, and metabolic syndrome.
Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of the session, the participant (learner) in this session will be able to: 1. Describe the prevalence of various domains of physical activity among adults >=18 years of age 2. Identify individual and community level predictors of body mass index 3. Describe racial/ethnic differences in body composition found among postmenopausal women participating in the Women's Health Initiative 4. Identify patterns of weight change in adulthood 5. Recognize the definitions of metabolic syndrome (MS) proposed by World Health Organization (WHO, 1999), Third Report of the National Cholesterol Education Program’s Adult Treatment Panel (ATP III, 2001) and International Diabetes Foundation (IDF, 2005).
