This session is focused on the process and results of BMI reporting in Arkansas. State law, Arkansas Act 1220 was passed to combat childhood obesity and has the requirements of annually assessing BMI of all public school students and confidentially reporting the results to parents. Longitudinal data will be presented. In addition, information on the process of transitioning from a paper to electronic system of tracking this data will be presented. Collecting this data has incited considerable debate about unintentional consequences, particularly weight-based teasing. Results will be discussed about this consequence of BMI assessments, as well as any policy changes that occurred as a result of increased awareness of issues related to childhood obesity. | |||
Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of the session, the participant (learner) in this session will be able to: 1. Identify the longitudinal trends in childhood and adolescent obesity in Arkansas. 2. Analyze the applicability of electronic assessment of BMI in other school and community environments 3. Articulate the implications of weight-based teasing and consequences for consideration of BMI screening policies. 4.
