School-based health services should involve a collaborative effort to target all components of health including the mental health needs of students. An overview of mental health services including methods, importance of strategic planning and prioritization of services as well as the role of connecting families, school and community resources will be presented. A model for training school nurses for mental health promotion as well as the efforts of the Healing Team approach to provide for the mental health needs of New Orleans children and their families in the aftermath of hurricane Katrina will also be presented. | |||
Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of the session, the participant (learner) in this session will be able to: 1. Identify methods for impacting the mental health of school children 2. Identify strategies for connecting families with school and community mental health resources as well as ways to increase parental involvement in school-based parent training. 3. Identify the importance of effective training of school nurses, specifically with the Bright Futures Mental Health program 4. Identify the components of the Healing Team model used post-Katrina as a response to mental health needs of school-age children and their families in New Orleans. | |||
