Statement of Purpose and Institute Overview:
The purpose of this institute is to teach public health practitioners how to use a computer based planning tool to apply social marketing to address important public health issues. The institute will provide practitioners with principles of a social marketing approach to public health. Social Marketing is a powerful approach for moving beyond health education and communication. By understanding your audiences you can better help them negotiate specific barriers they face in adopting healthy behaviors. Through the use of formative research, marketing theory, and best practices in behavioral science and program evaluation, social marketing can help develop tailored, evidence based interventions. CDCynergy-Social Marketing Edition Version 2.0 (CDC-SM2) is a CD-ROM based tutorial and planning guide for applying social marketing systematically to public health issues. Designed as an interactive training and decision support tool, the CD contains case studies, commentary from experts, an extensive resource library, tips for managers and tutorials that take the user step-by-step through the process of effective program development. Developed by the Turning Point Social Marketing National Excellence Collaborative, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the Academy for Educational Development, the tool is based on CDCynergy, a CDC guide for planning health communication programs.
