Health Literacy for Public Health and Human Rights
Statement of Purpose and Institute Overview:
The purpose of this institute is threefold. First, the discussions and presentations will familiarize participants with health literacy research findings related to the match between systems demands and individuals’ skills as well as to the link between literacy skills and health outcomes. Second, the institute will provide insight into the links between health literacy and existing disparities. Issues related to research protocols, rights and responsibilities, consent, and care-related encounters will be addressed. Third, the institute will increase participants’ ability to integrate literacy and cultural considerations in health communication efforts. These objectives will be met through didactic presentations, discussions, and hands on learning experiences. Health literacy, a vibrant field of inquiry, is strongly linked to multiple levels of health communication. Considerations of literacy related barriers must be part of our analyses of health practices and research and inform our discussions of equity – access to information, understanding of rights, and dignified treatment of individuals and communities.
