This symposium will cover the three major components of sexually transmitted disease epidemiology: determinants of sexual behavior and sexually transmitted infection; structuring and planning sexually transmitted disease (STD) prevention programs; and program evaluation and quality improvement. The presentations will place STD transmission dynamics and STD prevention in the current context. A context in which sexual transactions are undergoing a revolution with the expansion of sex partner recruitment on the internet, the sex industry and poverty; funds allocated to public health programs are declining nationally and locally while demands on public health programs increase; and requirements of highly bureaucratized regulation are being enhanced.
Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of the session, the participant (learner) in this session will be able to: 1. Discuss the current parameters of tension between the increasing demands on public health and declining public health resources.
