This session will highlight the connection between labor, including organized labor, the war in Iraq and public health issues. It will include a discussion of the direct and indirect health consequences for the Iraqi people and for the U.S. and other coalition countries. The war against working people will be a focus, including a discussion of the misdirection of resources toward war and away from meeting the human needs and the attack on unions. The devastation of health care and public health processes in the Iraq and the U.S. will be addressed, along with a focus on the connection of the war with the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Veterans' health issues will be a focus. This session will highlight the growth and significance of the antiwar movement within labor and the connection between organized labor and public health. | |||
Learning Objectives: By the end of the session, participants will be able to 1) Describe the direct and indirect adverse health effects of the war in Iraq; 2) Describe the impact of the war on the dismantling of the social safety net in the U.S.; 3) Understand the connection of the war in Iraq with the aftermath of Katrina and with the loss of public health initiatives; 4) Describe efforts and possible actions to limit the severity of this war and efforts to prevent damage by ending the current war and preventing future conflicts. | |||
