School-Based Health Care and Services
School based health centers have the potential to impact student health status. They provide physical and mental health service to children and adolescents in 44 states. The SBHC Outcomes study was a three long study to evaluate the health care utilization and costs to students in SBHC. A nationwide survey of state agencies was conducted to identify state support for SBHC and future growth of the SBHC model. Further investigation of school based health services is presented with data from a national sample of school nurses. These data describe the work environment of school nurses, useful for identifying best practices and a safe environment. An example of services targeted to a specific health need of students is presented with the consulting physician model used to enhance school health services for children with asthma.
Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of the session, the participant (learner) in this session will be able to: 1.Understand the effect school-based health centers have on student health status. 2. Identify trends in state support for the school-based health center model 3. Describe characteristics of school nurse work environments 4.Describe school health services, including role of consulting physicians for children with asthma
