148500 Provide Culturally Competent Messages to Latinos That Lead to Ownership of Accessible Resources in Their CommunityMonday, November 5, 2007: 8:30 AM
Millions of Hispanics live life without the knowledge of available local health resources and services. These resources in many cases are culturally competent, but Hispanics are not aware of them.
The campaign Celebra La Vida Con Salud (Celebrate a Healthy life) consists of a network of entities that serve as a vehicle to inform and provide health services to underserved Hispanics across the U.S. Celebra reaches Hispanics through its on-the-ground health festival tour, on-air radio and television health education components, on-line information campaign and on-going community outreach efforts. Celebra on-the-ground is a grassroots effort that has served more than 125,000 community members since its inception six years ago. Our research shows that a high percentage of festival participants surveyed follow up with visits to a doctor or health clinic (54%), and that they share the materials and information from the festival with others (84%). Celebra's effectiveness is a product of heavy inclusivity and dialogue between community partners and targeted audience. Services offered by Celebra always consist of 1) Personal health check, such as a culturally competent health professional providing a check-up, 2) interactive activities to apply the information learned, and 3) follow-up contact information for participant to continue towards the desired behavior change. Celebra remains a strong vehicle to empower the community with ownership of available resources through its clear messages and constant re-adoption to audience demands and needs.
