156463 Addressing the Health Care Needs of Ohio's Lesbian Community: Results of a SurveyMonday, November 5, 2007: 5:06 PM
Locating validated information about lesbian health can be difficult due to limited research in this community. Research findings have indicated that lesbians often have higher rates of heart attacks, weigh more, and eat fewer fruits and vegetables than heterosexual women (Solarz, 1999). Higher rates of cigarette smoking in lesbian populations have increased the risks for cancers such as oral, esophageal, gastric, lung, cervical, and colon (Aaron et al., 2001; Cochran, et al., 2001). Higher rates of depression, stress and low self-esteem have also been identified in lesbians (Hughes & Wilsnack, 1997; Trippett, 1994).
The purpose of this study was to explore the health behaviors of Ohio lesbians in order to identify their key health issues. Surveys were disseminated at key lgbt events in Ohio and through a local lgbt mailing list. 338 surveys were collected throughout 2005, and 152 self-identified as lesbian, queer, and/or gay living in Ohio. Participants' ages ranged from 20-70 years, with a mean age of 43 years. Depression, high blood cholesterol, and asthma were the top three self-identified health issues of the respondents, with over one-third of respondents acknowledging depression as a health condition. Over 63 percent of respondents reported being discriminated against because of their sexuality, and about 25 percent reported experiencing discrimination in health care settings. The results of this study are meant to serve as a guide for all organizations in creating services and programs that will best address the health needs of the lesbian community.
