Unembedded: Four Four Independent Photojournalists on the War in Iraq- Ghaith Abdul-Ahad, Kael Alford, Thorne Anderson and Rita Leistner is a book and photography exhibition project that brings together four photojournalists who have worked extensively in Iraq. Working outside the confines of the U.S. military's official “embedding” program, the photojournalists document issues often underrepresented in the mainstream media: the insurgency as seen from inside the separate resistance movements, civilians affected by the violent battles between the U.S. and insurgent forces, and the devastating effects of civilian casualties. The book and exhibit give audiences a nuanced view of the violence in Iraq that has followed the US-led invasion in 2003. APHA, the Labor Caucus and the Peace Caucus have collaborated to bring Unembedded to Washington DC during APHA's 2007 Annual Meeting. The APHA exhibition of Unembedded was initiated by APHA members in Arkansas, who co-created with the photojournalists an exhibit in Little Rock to increase awareness about this war's horrific toll on human well-being. APHA's policy statements opposing the war bolstered support for the innovative project displayed at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences Fay W. Boozman College of Public Health and Philander Smith College earlier this year (see session # 4157.0). The APHA Unembedded exhibition and opening reception will be held at the AFL-CIO headquarters: 815 16th St., N.W., Washington, D.C. There will be an APHA Opening Reception for the Unembedded Exhibit: Monday, November 5, 2007, 6 PM to 8:30 PM – with access until 10 pm.
