Prof Peter D. Donnelly, MD MPH FRCP FFPH , Professor of Public Health Medicine, University of St Andrews, St Andrews, Fife, United Kingdom
Ten or even five years ago a total ban on all indoor smoking in Scotland would have seemed inconceivable and yet that is what happened in March 2006. Eighteen months later we will review the lessons learned, the immediate health impact and the longer term implications for Public Health in Scotland and elsewhere; including – why we could not use health at work arguments, why preparing public opinion was so important and what may be the implications in other policy areas.

Learning Objectives:
To help participants understand that the process of tobacco control legislation is hard-won and requires an approach which draws on many skills – epidemiological, clinical policy analysis, public opinion polling, marketing, political legislative and not least leadership.
