The presentations in this session describe innovative methods of reaching special populations through health communication strategies. Specific topics include reaching English- and Spanish-speaking women with a social marketing campaign to promote taking multivitamins, using telenovelas as channels for information regarding diabetes prevention among Latinos, measuring the effectiveness of a spiritually-based intervention to increase colorectal cancer screening among African Americans, assisting deaf adults in overcoming barriers to healthcare access, and assessing pictogram-based, medication-specific instructional materials for low SES parents.
Session Objectives: At the end of the session, the participant will be able to:
(1) Understand challenges in reaching diverse populations; (2) Discuss strategies for implementing heath behavior interventions in diverse populations; and (3) Examine evidence for developing social marketing materials in consumers’ native languages.
