Background/Introduction: Samuels & Associates conducted a multi-method evaluation of senior nutrition programs in Santa Clara County, CA. The evaluation was funded by the Council on Aging, Silicon Valley, in partnership with The Health Trust. Data were collected in the spring of 2007. Methods: The senior nutrition evaluation assessed the extent to which the Congregate Meal Program and Home Delivered Meal Program in Santa Clara County, CA, are meeting the needs of seniors. The evaluation employed a variety of methodologies including stakeholder and provider interviews, participant focus groups, analysis of secondary data sources, and a literature review and cost analysis to document the successes and challenges experienced by the programs, and opportunities, strategies and barriers for improving senior nutrition. Findings: Older adults are at risk for hunger, isolation, and poor quality diets. Findings from the senior nutrition evaluation highlight the nutrition and socialization benefits of the congregate meal program and home delivered meal program for seniors. Improved administration, and increased funding, outreach and coordination of the congregate and home delivered meal programs are needed to ensure seamless nutrition services for older adults and to maintain their independence.
Learning Objectives: • Articulate the role of congregate and home delivered meals in meeting the nutrition and socialization needs of seniors.
• Discuss innovation needed in senior nutrition programs to better serve the needs and preferences of an ethnically diverse and growing senior population.
• Discuss administrative and funding barriers to innovations in senior nutrition programs at the local, state and national levels.
• Discuss opportunities for improving and sustaining senior nutrition programs.
