The Department of Defense estimates that 40 percent of veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan will experience PTSD and other mental health problems when they arrive home. This will represent approximately 600,000 veterans. The session will describe steps that DOD and VA are taking to address this problem, as well as other system designs and approaches that could be employed to extend the capacity of these two organizations. The importance of mutual support and informal care will be emphasized. Participants will be given an opportunity to comment upon this work and suggest improvements.

Learning Objectives:
1.To understand the epidemiology of PTSD in returning veterans. 2.To understand the current efforts of DOD and VA. 3.To understand next steps that need to be undertaken.
