BACKGROUND: An assessment conducted in 2005 revealed problems related to TB drug supply in all five Central Asian countries. In some facilities shortages occurred, in others drugs expired. The existing drug management systems were not able to resolve these problems.

GOAL: To put in place a Logistics Management Information System (LMIS) that provides adequate information to ensure an uninterrupted and efficient drug supply at all levels.

METHODS: After reviews of the existing systems, new LMIS systems were developed and field tested by Project HOPE and John Snow, Inc. (JSI). The process was guided by Thematic Working Groups on Drug Management, established in each of the countries. Since field-testing was successful, trainings for implementation of the systems were developed and conducted across the region. The initial focus has been on training of trainers.

RESULTS: In each of the countries, an LMIS system has been formally accepted. In each country, workshops have been held, trainings have been conducted on how this system works. Trained staff cadres have been prepared in each country and are ready to support nationwide roll-out of the LMIS.

CONCLUSIONS: Reliable LMIS systems have been successfully developed and are ready for implementation in each of the countries. The systems have been field-tested and widely accepted throughout the region. Results from pilot areas show that the system will provide adequate information on consumption and distribution of TB drugs at all levels, which will allow adequate and uninterrupted distribution of supplies.

Learning Objectives:
* Participants will learn about the process used to develop Logistics Management Information Systems in five Central Asian Republics. * Describe the process of developing Logistics Management Information Systems, understand the role of thematic working groups to inform the development process and articulate the need of field testing the systems. * Recognize and articulate the need for comprehensive and inclusive approach to develop a revised system of TB drug management.
