Problem: Obesity in children a growing concern in the United States. According to the NHANES surveys indicates the prevelence for children ages 6-11 has increased from 6.5% (1976-80) to 18.8% (2003-04). This age group can be readily targeted through school based interventions. This research implements the Commit 2 B Fit program in a 2nd grade class in Hollywood, Fl. Methodology: 26 students ages 7-8, participated in the program by keeping logs of their activity and intakes in a Commit 2 B fit planner. The class was encouraged to set goals for intake, given assigned physical activities for homework and given positive reinforcement and incentives to continue. The logs were signed off by parents and reviewed by the teacher. Evaluation is based on the initial survey of activity and intake sent to parents and a final survey and assessment of the logs after a 2 month period. Research Question: Does the Commit 2 B Fit Program significantly increase physical activity and fruit/vegetable intake in children ages 7-8?
