Roundtable
The roundtable will highlight outcomes of a study to assess the effects of a school counselor-led drumming intervention to improve the social and emotional well-being of 5th grade Latino students; findings from the “Grand Canyon Trekkers,” a school-based physical activity program designed to examine the effects of a walking program on the obesity of high-risk, low-income K-6 Latino students; description of “Commit 2 B Fit,” an obesity prevention program for second grade students in Hollywood, Florida; summation of the “Concept Formation of Injury Prevention Program” for preschool children utilizing the “Healthy Tomorrow Curriculum” incorporating an understanding of injury through modeled experience; discussion of the impact of “Teen Peer Advocates,” an educational program for elementary students’ awareness and prevention of diabetes; a report on the success of the Stanford Medical Youth Science Program developed to engage low-income minority youth in research to promote healthful living in their schools and neighborhoods; results from a study to teach elementary school children to wash their hands and cover their coughs resulting in a 42% decrease in school absences; outline of a peer-education “Community-Based Abstinence Education Program” implemented for 12-18 year-olds in Southeastern Pennsylvania; a summary of ”Livin’ in Your Body 4 Life,” a DVD mini-series produced by South-Side Chicago high school students and professionals to reduce health disparities; and a presentation about the South Los Angeles high school peer-led “Youth Health Action Board,” a model for engaging students in promoting healthy school-community environmental changes.
Session Objectives: Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of this presentation, participants will be able to (1) Identify the results of a study done to measure the outcomes of a school counselor-led drumming intervention for improving the social and emotional well-being of 5th grade Latino students; (2) Elucidate the results of the Grand Canyon Trekkers Obesity prevention program for high-risk, low-income K-6 Latino students; (3) Describe the “Commit 2 B Fit” obesity prevention program for 2nd graders in Hollywood, Florida; (4) Articulate the “Healthy Tomorrow Curriculum” designed for preschool children on injury prevention; (5) Discuss the impact of the “Teen Peer Advocates” program on elementary students’ knowledge of diabetes; (6) Discuss the success of the Stanford Medical Youth Science Program (SMYSP) developed for training minority low-income high school youth to do research to promote healthful living in their schools and neighborhoods; (7) Summarize the results of a hand-washing, “cover your cough” study done with elementary school children to reduce school absenteeism; (8) Describe the peer education Community-Based Abstinence Education Program for youth aged 12-18 implemented in urban Southeastern Pennsylvania; (9) summarize the “Livin” in Your Body 4 Life” DVD miniseries developed by South-Side Chicago high school students and professionals for reducing health disparities; and (10) Describe the South Los Angeles peer led “Health Action Board” conceived by high school students for promoting healthy school-community environmental changes.
