A reflection on the special AJPH issue health without borders (a joint session between the Editorial Board and editors of the American Journal of Public Health)
Monday, October 27, 2008: 10:30 AM
Global demographic shifts have caused governments to respond to the health needs of diverse populations, native born or not. Migration and immigration impacts the individual, family, and community and have shifted our perspective regarding synergistic influences of co-occurring sociocultural factors. The American Journal of Public Health (Journal) is one avenue that highlights research and practice in this important area. The Journal's annual joint session features experienced editors and editorial board members who are able to offer expertise and guidance for publishing such work in a variety of formats. Emphasis will be placed on a) the concept of Health without Borders; b) understanding how acculturation issues have been conceptualized along with new directions for public health; and c) learning how Journal formats can be used to represent this work. In addition, the Journal's annual awards for outstanding reviewer and published author(s) who have substantially contributed to our mission of advancing public health will be acknowledged.
Learning Objectives: 1. Develop an understanding for the concept and meaning of Health without Borders;
2. Explore how individual research and practice findings can be used to design more effective public health interventions to reduce health disparities using evidence-based approaches that are relevant to the area of Health without Borders;
3. Describe diverse formats for publishing work on Health without Borders.
