191067 Recognition of CHES Certification by Employers

The Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES) credential has been in existence since 1989 and is increasing in numbers of exam registrants and recognition by employers. As of April 2008, NCHEC has more than 8,000 active Certified Health Education Specialists (CHES) credential holders. The health education job analysis process is currently underway to once again validate the responsibilities and competences utilized in health education practice. This presentation will also address awareness of this certification by employers by analyzing the NCHEC website job postings for the previous 6 months by work setting.

1. Discuss job analysis methods in progress to again validate the competencies of health education specialists 2. Describe employer postings of health education jobs by worksite type and numbers on the NCHEC website in the previous 6 months.

The mission of The National Commission for Health Education Credentialing, Inc. (NCHEC) is to improve the practice of health education and to serve the public and profession of health education by certifying health education specialists, promoting professional development, and strengthening professional preparation and practice. She serves on the CNHEO Health Profession Marketing Committee. Linda has co-authored articles in peer reviewed journals including Health Education & Behavior and The American Journal of Health Education. Linda is a Certified Health Education Specialist and has presented at national conferences including the American Public Health Association Conference, The National Organization for Competency Assurance, The Society for Public Health Educators Conference and the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education and Dance. In addition, she has more than 18 years experience in hospital based community health promotion and in that role was in a position to hire health educators.
