Human Rights violations against migrants on the U.S. México Border
Tuesday, October 28, 2008: 2:50 PM
Since 1994 the United States government has implemented a strategy of militarizing the U.S. border with México. The military strategy employed by the United States includes building and fortifying thousands of miles of border wall, combined with military operations and increased Border Patrol stationed along the region to prevent people from crossing into the Unites States. This strategy, known locally as Operation Gatekeeper, has failed to stop the flow of migrants and instead has created a serious Human Rights nightmare, as more than 5,000 people have perished attempting to cross into the US to find work. Additionally, in the post-9/11 era policy makers have erroneously combined the issue of Immigration with issues of National Security; prompting immigration law enforcement agencies to utilize questionable strategies and tactics in their practice to detain, incarcerate and deport migrant workers. As a consequence the immigration agencies are utilizing the pretext of National Security to enforce immigration laws while systematically violating Civil, Constitutional and Human Rights of migrants and non-migrants. This presentation will demonstrate, through video and other visual aids, the various manifestations of Human Rights violations directed against migrant workers in and around the U.S. Mexico border region.
