This interesting session will focus on the risk factors for and prevention of breast and colorectal cancers. Presentations will include discussions of the relationships between vitamin D, diabetes, meat consumption and colorectal cancer. Presentations will also discussions of the relationships between breast cancer and latitude, vitamin D and smoke inhalation.
Session Objectives: At the conclusion of the session, the participant (learner) will be able to:
1. Describe variation in survival from breast cancer according to race and latitude
2. Appreciate the role of vitamin D in prevention of colorectal adenoma
3. Describe the IARC, the California Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Surgeon General’s Office conclusions about the relationship between secondhand smoke and breast cancer
4. To evaluate the association between type 2 diabetes mellitus and colorectal cancer among a cohort of Hispanic patients
5. Identify the risk of colon cancer associated with dietary consumption of heterocyclic amines and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons
