5178.0 Construction Safety: A Panel Discussion

One paper will be an overview of current topics in construction health and safety.This presentation analyzes the causes of death in the U.S. construction industry using the Bureau of Labor Statistics Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries Research File. Performance metrics are a way of measuring an organization's effectiveness in reaching critical goals. Metrics are designed to drive improvement and characterize progess made. NIOSH, in collaboration with CPWR and MNOSHA Consulation, conducted a pilot study to identify qualitative and quantitative performance metrics on safety and healeth for the construction industry, which were then rated by small-to-large construction firms. The presentation gives the process and results - a starting point for development of metrics for construction safety and health. Another paper will discuss what is needed to develop and carry out an emergency plan for construction sites. Topics to be discussed include: 1) on site preplanning and development of Emergency Response Plan (ERP) ; 2) coordination with outside resources and authorities; 3) training and drilling of site emergency management team; 4) incident management; 5) critical incident stress management; and 6) handling of the press.
Session Objectives: Upon completion of this session, participants will be able to: *Identify four leading causes of fatalities in the construction industry *Identify health and safety performance indicators for small-to-large construction firms. * Recognize types of emergencies found on construction site. * Learn the steps needed to develop an emergency plan for a construction site.
