Policy Issues in School Health will include presentations on The outcomes of a study undertaken to examine the impact of legislation on the establishment of School Health Advisory Councils in Indiana school corporations; findings from the 2006 School Health Policies and Programs Study (SHPPS) concerning physical activity and nutrition policies and programs in US schools; results from an analysis done to assess wellness policies from a nationally representative sample of US school districts; the impact of the CDC DASH (Division of Adolescent and School Health) Training Network (D-Train) workshops to increase participants’ knowledge and skills for improving school health programs; and a review of the “Safe Routes to School” (SRTS) laws enacted to enhance children’s physical activity by promoting safe walking and biking routes to schools.
Session Objectives: Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of this session participants will be able to (1) Discuss the results of a study done to assess the impact of legislation to establish School Health Advisory Councils in Indiana school corporations; (2) Articulate findings of the 2006 School Health Policies and Programs Study (SHPPS) concerning physical activity and nutrition policies and programs in US schools; (3) Describe the results from a study undertaken to appraise wellness policies from a nationally representative sample of US school districts; (4) Discuss the results of an evaluation to determine the effectiveness of the CDC DASH (Division of Adolescent and School Health ) Training Network (D-Train) workshops conducted to increase participants’ knowledge and skills to improve school health programs; and 5) Describe the variation in State “Safe Routes to School” (SRTS) laws enacted to enhance school children’s physical activity by promoting safe walking and biking routes to schools.
