5136.0 Curricular Trends in Reproductive Health Education for Youth

Health education curricular trends in reproductive health for youth will incorporate discussions including a report on abstinence-only versus comprehensive sexuality education in Puerto Rico. A presentation utilizing a case-study design in the Southwest in support of comprehensive sex education compared to abstinence-only programs in the United States. Findings of a qualitative/quantitative evaluation of a social studies-based sex education curriculum in Cleveland, Ohio, entitled “What’s the Real Deal About Masculinity?” The last presentation will describe outcomes of the “Healthy Lifestyle” course developed for youth in the Republic of Georgia including issues of reproductive health, puberty and HIV/AIDS.
Session Objectives: Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of this presentation, participants will be able to (1) Discuss a report on abstinence-only versus comprehensive sexuality education in Puerto Rico; (2) Describe the results of a case-study design investigation done in the Southwest to assess comprehensive sex education in comparison to abstinence-only programs in the US; (3) Articulate the results of a qualitative/quantitative study done in Cleveland, Ohio to assess the social studies-based sex education curriculum entitled “What’s the Real Deal About Masculinity?”; and (4) Discuss the outcomes of the “Healthy Lifestyle” course designed for youth in the republic of Georgia.
