This session will include presentations on the results of a quantitative evaluation done to investigate the effects of partnerships between local health departments and schools on public health preparedness. Address “The Conceptual Framework for Communication” used in Kansas to guide communication between school districts and local communities to work together collaboratively in support of a healthy school environment. Discuss The Harlem School Health Program (HSHP) launched as a health promotion initiative for New York City schools in East and Central Harlem which focused on physical activity and asthma issues of children. Conclude with a presentation of the collaborative efforts in Indiana of communities and academia working together to develop a guidebook with concise information for educators on the care and education for students living with diabetes.
Session Objectives: Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of this session participants will be able to: (1) Explain the results of a quantitative study conducted to evaluate the effects of local health departments partnering with schools to enhance public health preparedness; (2) Articulate the “Conceptual Framework for Communication” used in Kansas to guide community and schools to work together in support of healthier school children; (3) Discuss the outcomes of a study done to assess the effectiveness of the Harlem School Health Program (HSHP) for elementary school children in New York City; and (4) Describe the efforts in Indiana of community and academia working together to develop a written guide for educators on the care and education for students living with diabetes having implications for all students
