WINTER SOLDIER: IRAQ AND AFGHANISTAN Winter soldiers, according to Tom Paine, are the people who stand up for the soul of their country, even in its darkest hours. Winter Soldier: Iraq and Afghanistan, a four-day event sponsored by Iraq Veterans Against the War in 2008, featured testimony exposing the human consequences of failed policy. It was named Winter Soldier to honor a similar gathering 30 years ago of veterans from the Vietnam War. This 65-minute DVD, especially produced for APHA, features public health related excerpts and testimony. Further footage can be accessed from the Website: www.ivaw.org
Session Objectives: 1. Describe and discuss the significance of Winter Soldier: Iraq and Afghanistan, a convening of more than 200 veterans who shared eyewitness accounts of the occupations. 2. Recognize that wrongdoings in Iraq and Afghanistan are not isolated incidents perpetrated by "bad apples." 3. Describe and discuss the costs of the occupation of Iraq.
