4214.0 Evidence Based Prescribing and Conflicts of Interest in Drug Policy & Pharmacy Services

The purpose of this session is to provide an overview of pharmacy policies being implemented at the state level to prevent conflicts of interest, reduce the influence of marketing, and enhance prescriber education. The session will identify policies being implemented in the states, some of which are being considered as part of federal health care reform. In addition to the legislative overview the panel will focus especially on programs being implemented in the District of Columbia including academic detailing, drug salesperson licensing, safe prescribing and gift and payment disclosure, as well as a Northern New England initiative to provide objective prescriber education. The session is relevant to medical providers seeking to learn about existing and proposed policy that will affect their practices as well as anyone interested generally in public policy and improving prescribing practices.
Session Objectives: 1. Describe state initiatives and emerging trends in promoting evidence based prescribing. 2. Discuss comparative analysis and consumer education resources by states. 3. Identify efforts by the District of Columbia in enacting and implementing initiatives to promote evidence based medicine.
