Background Rooted in cultural values, beliefs and practices, spirituality guided daily life of ancient and modern Hawaiians. The concept of Native Hawaiian spirituality is a part of a Native Hawaiians' identity. Native Hawaiian spirituality is presented in this concept analysis using Rodger's evolutionary method. Description Using Rodger's evolutionary method of concept analysis, a literature review on Native Hawaiian spirituality was performed. The literature review included articles and texts published within the past 40 years from health, history and anthropology written on or about Native Hawaiian culture, creation stories, cosmos and health. Lessons Learned Forty-one were included in this concept analysis. Guided by Rodger's evolutionary method, Native Hawaiian spirituality is presented in three parts, pre 1778, 1778 to 1874, and 1874 to present, followed by a definition and implications. Spirituality is often associated with religion and culture. For Native Hawaiians, ola (health) is based in spirituality. E Ola Pono (life in perfect order), is a contemporary definition of Native Hawaiian spirituality. Recommendation This concept analysis explored the evolution of Native Hawaiian spirituality from ancient to modern times. Native Hawaiian spirituality began as an integral part of religious beliefs, practices and social order including government in ancient times. With the arrival of Captain James Cook, Native Hawaiian spirituality evolved to include western ideologies and religion. Today, Native Hawaiian spirituality is based on cultural values considers religion and is a part of the cultural identity and a way of life.
