220464 From Manual to Video: Implementing a Quality Statewide Medication Administration Program for Unlicensed PersonnelTuesday, November 9, 2010
: 9:15 AM - 9:30 AM
Stakeholders in Colorado developed a standardized Medication Administration training for unlicensed personnel to ensure the safety of children requiring medication in child care and school settings. The curriculum has evolved since its inception and currently includes modules for emergency medications inhaled medications, a Train the Trainer component, and a training DVD. The presenter will seek to share the development process with those considering a similar type of training in their local communities. There will be an opportunity to explore the current materials being used in Colorado to provide the training. A CD with the curriculum and the accompanying training DVD will be provided to the participants. The recent H1N1 concerns have demonstrated a need for more involvement with public health nurses in the child care and school settings. In Colorado communities where this partnership was strong there was excellent surveillance of the incidence of H1N1 as well as technical assistance for school and child care staff on exclusion guidelines, treatment options and guidance around a visit to a health care provider. This training may provide public health nurses with yet another way to enhance their relationships with school and child care personnel to better serve the children in these very population based settings. There will be an opportunity for participants to consider their own settings and some of the things that may allow this training to be used as well as a chance to discuss barriers and challenges to its implementation.
