“Identifying gaps in the environmental public health system to perform the essential environmental health services"
Tuesday, November 9, 2010
: 4:30 PM - 4:45 PM
This presentation will provide results from agencies that participated in the Environmental Public Health Performance Standards (EnvPHPS) workshops during 2008-2009. Results from completing the EnvPHPS instrument provide a national picture of the capacity of state, tribal, and local environmental health programs to perform the essential environmental health services. Two key gaps have been identified as a result of the input from over 80 agencies. Information on the factors contributing to these gaps will be reviewed and recommendations for improvement offerred. In addition, environmental health capacity will be compared with information from the National Public Health Performance Standards. These data and the process of assessing capacity can be an excellent tool for identifying environmental health justice issues. Environmental health justice refers to the equal capacity of environmental public health programs to provide the essential environmental health services regardless of socio-economic status, race or other factors.
