To reduce childhood mortality, MDG Goal 4 (Reduce by two-thirds, between 1990 and 2015, the under-five mortality rate) we must assure that MDG goals 1 through 7 are achieved. The leading causes of childhood mortality (death under 5 years of age) are Neonatal (36%), respiratory (17%), diarrhea (16%), a variety of infectious diseases (22+% - malaria 7%, measles 4%) and injury (4%). Reducing maternal mortality-MDG 5 will decrease neonatal deaths. Clean water because there is sanitation (MDG 7) will reduce diarrheal disease. Infectious diseases are addressed in MDG 6. Nutrition is an underlying cause of much of the childhood mortality (MDG 1) and all aspects of childhood mortality will be greatly reduced if there were universal literacy (MDG 2). Some of the goals related to reducing childhood mortality are relatively simple, others not. Stakeholders must start addressing the interrelationships among the MDGs if they are to be achieved.
