Using CDC's Maternity Practices in Infant Nutrition and Care (mPINC) survey results as a catalyst for change: Indiana case study
Wednesday, November 10, 2010
: 11:05 AM - 11:20 AM
Despite many statewide approaches to encourage Indiana's 98 delivering hospitals to improve their breastfeeding-related maternity practices (as reflected in their CDC mPINC survey scores), Indiana's hospitals wanted additional support and information. To create real change, it was crucial to reach the people who have an impact on hospital policies and practices, which required a focused, top-down initiative. Modeled after the 2009 Massachusetts Mother-Baby Summit, the 2010 Indiana Perinatal Hospital Summit was a training and informational event designed for policy and clinical leaders across the state. Summit participants were invited to attend the event, which included presentations and educational sessions by members of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as well as the Joint Commission. The goals of the Summit were to provide participants: information regarding new perinatal hospital quality improvement measures; information about how the CDC mPINC survey can be used to help improve hospitals' breastfeeding rates; an opportunity to discuss the impacts of the perinatal measures and mPINC survey results; and a “tool kit” of sample policies, procedures and best practice guidelines used to implement the perinatal measures and mPINC survey. The Indiana Perintal Network planned and coordinated the Summit in collaboration with the Indiana State Department of Health and the Indiana Hospital Association. This session will provide a practical overview of the event, with the goal of providing attendees the tools and knowledge necessary to duplicate the event in other states. In addition, qualitative and quantitative summaries of Summit evaluations will provided.
