4183.0 Advances in epidemiologic methods, research and surveillanceTuesday, November 9, 2010: 12:30 PM - 2:00 PM
Oral
This interesting session will focus on various issues related to the epidemiological methods. Presentations will include a discussion of adolescent sexual health outcomes and program evaluation using geographical information systems (GIS); implementation of a national amyotropic lateral sclerosis (ALS) registry; utilization of the odds against the null hypothesis to evaluate study outcomes when the exposure is misclassified; and, how discordant question types to collect sexual behavior, attitude, and intention data can alter effect measure estimates. Another presentation will discuss the novel method of employing global positioning systems (GPS) and satellite photography for survey sampling.
Session Objectives: At the conclusion of this session, the learner (participant) will be able to:
1) Describe the use of GIS mapping for outcomes such as sexual transmitted infections;
2) Assess the impact of misclassification of exposures on study power and alpha (type 1) error;
3) Evaluate the magnitude of potential bias when discordant questions are utilized.
