Targeting and improving food and physical activity environments in the childcare setting will likely lead to better outcomes as it relates to obesity prevention. During this session speakers will evaluate the challenges and opportunities of promoting healthy eating and physical activity in child care settings. Speakers will explore these challenges and opportunities while implementing nutrition and physical activity standards for child care in Delaware, San Diego and Los Angeles Counties, CA. The program, Eating Smart from the Start will be explored and will show a positive impact on providing a healthy food environment for children in a child care setting. During this session presenters will describe these projects and evaluate the impact of each on the food environment and physical activity in a child care setting.
Session Objectives: 1) Describe and evaluate five community efforts to promote improving food and physical activity environments in the childcare setting.
2) Identify challenges to offering nutritious food and physical activity in childcare settings
3) Explore policy that may improve quality food and physical activity in childcare programs and 4) Discuss best practices for research and evaluation of nutrition and physical activity based programs in childcare settings.
