3317.0 Safety Net Hospitals and the 2010 Haiti Earthquake

In this session, you will hear from: 1. Sari Siegel-Spieler, Ph.D., NAPH, who will share findings and common themes from surveys and interviews with member facilities about the safety net’s response to victims of the Haiti earthquake; 2. Jeanne Eckes-Roper, RN, MBA, Director of Emergency Preparedness at Broward Health, a safety net hospital system in South Florida that received airlifted patients from Haiti and can present her firsthand experiences in responding to the emergency; and 3. Slande Celeste, MPH, from the University of Florida, who personally provided volunteer services in response to the earthquake.
Session Objectives: Demonstrate how safety net hospitals and others can prepare for and accommodate the influx of patients resulting from major disasters, both foreign and domestic. Eexplain the volunteer response of safety net hospitals across the United States.
